Pitt opens season by beating Rhode Island, 83-75

Pitt defeated Rhode Island, 83-75, tonight in the season opener at the Petersen Events Center.

Brad Wanamaker led the way with 24 points and Ashton Gibbs added 20 points.

No. 5 Pitt trailed for most of the first half and needed a 9-0 run in the final 1:20 to take a 37-36 lead at the intermission. The Panthers led by eight with five minutes to play, but that lead was trimmed to two with 1:40 left.

The Panthers were 6 for 6 from the free-throw line in the final 34 seconds to seal the victory.
