Pitt debuts at No. 5 in AP basketball poll

Pitt will begin a season in the top five of the Associated Press men???s basketball poll for the fifth time in school history. The Panthers are the No. 5 team in the preseason poll, which was announced today.

It is the third time in the past five years that Pitt debuts as a top five team in the AP poll. The Panthers were No. 4 in the 2006 preseason poll and No. 5 in the 2008 poll. They also started the 1987 season as the No. 4 team and the 2002 season as the No. 5 team.

Defending national champion Duke is No. 1 followed by Michigan State, Kansas State and Ohio State. Two other Big East teams are ranked in the top 10. Villanova is No. 6 and Syracuse is No. 10.
