NEWPORT, R.I. -- Pitt was picked as the heavy favorite to win the Big East in a preseason poll of selected media who cover the league. The Panthers received 22 of a possible 24 first place votes and had 190 points.

West Virginia received one of the other two first-place votes and tied for second in the poll with Cincinnati with 142 total points.

The other first place vote went to Connecticut, which finished fourth with 131 points, followed by Rutgers (99 points), South Florida (79), Syracuse (41) and Louisville (40).

It is the second year in a row the Panthers were installed as the favorites in the preseason media poll.

West Virginia star tailback Noel Devine missed today's media day because he is sick and in bed in his hotel room. According to a West Virginia spokesman, Devine likely has a light case of food poisoning from a seafood dinner he ate last night.
