STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Penn State officials say a graduate student was stranded in a campus elevator for about seven hours due to a brief weekend power outage.

Campus police spokesman Tyrone Parham said the student was working in Keller Building on the campus and got into the elevator at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday. The elevator got stuck on the way to the first floor, and it had no emergency phone -- and Mr. Parham said the student did not have a cell phone.

Parham said a staff person called police shortly before 8:30 a.m. and the student was freed within an hour.

Penn State spokeswoman Lisa Powers said the elevator did not need repair but had to be reset. She said the university is installing emergency phones in the 315 campus elevators but has installed only 150 so far.
