A Butler County man died in a traffic accident involving at least four vehicles yesterday on Route 8 in Penn Township in the county.

The coroner's office identified the victim today as James McCandless, 24, of Renfrew.

The accident was reported at 3:30 p.m. in front of Dairy Queen, north of Airport Road.

Mr. McCandless was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:35 p.m., the coroner said.

Penn Township police are investigating the cause of the accident.

The pile-up caused Route 8 to be shut down for several hours in both directions because of the investigation and to clear the wreckage.
