On his way to a pair of local fund raisers, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani stopped in the Strip District for a late breakfast of pizza and fontinella cheese. The barely nibbled repast in the upstairs dining room of Sunseri Brothers was part of a quick photo opportunity on Mr. Giuliani's first visit to the Pittsburgh region since launching his bid for the Republican presidential nomination.

With businessmen Jimmy and Nino Sunseri as his tour guides, the former mayor picked up some pasta and peppers before heading out onto Penn Avenue for a brief walking tour. As though on cue, a 10-month-old baby appeared for him to heft and kiss as he strode onto the sidewalk.

Later in the day, Mr. Giuliani was scheduled to appear at closed fund-raising events in Peters Township and at the Duquesne Club, Downtown.

In a brief press conference, Mr. Giuliani said he was not deterred by Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind., yesterday, in which the veteran Republican expressed doubt about the Bush administration's surge strategy in Iraq. Mr. Giuliani said he remained confident in the judgment and performance of the American commander in Baghdad, Gen. David Petraeus, and would back the administration strategy as long as the commanders in the filed remained behind it.

The Republican faulted the Democratic presidential contenders for supporting a timetable for withdrawal of American troops, arguing that that general position ignored the overall threat posed by "Islamic fascism.''

Tomorrow, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney will visit Pittsburgh to raise money as the second quarter reporting period draws to a close. Sen. John McCain had been scheduled to visit tomorrow as well, but his campaign canceled a breakfast meeting due to the press of Senate business.
