Ahead of the Aging Boom
Post-Gazette Team

Staff Writer Gary Rotstein, 40, a member of the PG’s Special Issues team, coordinated the project and wrote three installments covering general trends and health issues. He has held a variety of writing and editing positions with the newspaper since 1983. His last series examined infertility.

Assistant Managing Editor Susan Puskar, 46, will focus on gender issues in aging. She became co-editor of the PG’s Special Issues team in 1997 after serving as a features editor since joining the Post-Gazette in 1984. She has worked in a variety of reporting and editing positions for four other newspapers, including USA Today.

Staff Writer Sally Kalson, 48, will focus on issues involving family relationships and caregiving. Also a member of the PG Special Issues team, she has been an award-winning columnist and feature writer for the newspaper since 1984.

Staff Writer Diana Block, 26, will focus on the work, volunteering and leisure habits of the elderly. She joined the PG in August to develop a new beat on aging issues.

Staff Photographer Tony Tye, 49, took the photographs for the series. He has worked on a wide range of photographic subjects, including a 1997 project on welfare reform, since joining the newspaper in 1984.

Graphic Artist James Hilston, 34, prepared the informational graphics for the series. Hilston was hired by the PG this year after working as a graphic artist at The Vindicator in Youngstown, Ohio.

Graphic Artist K.C. Conner, 31, designed the six-day series. She joined the PG in 1996 after getting her graphic design and art history degrees at the University of Arizona.
