“Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You,” a documentary about the 93-year-old creative force behind “All in the Family” and other groundbreaking television shows, will open Pittsburgh’s JFilm Festival on April 7.
The movie chronicles Mr. Lear’s life, work and achievements and asks how did a poor Jewish kid from Connecticut bring the world Archie Bunker, become one of the most successful TV producers, and bring subjects like war, poverty and prejudice into living rooms weekly.
Rob Reiner, George Clooney and Amy Poehler are among the many people interviewed in the film directed by Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady.
The festival will close April 17 with “A Tale of Love and Darkness,” Natalie Portman’s feature debut as writer and director. She tackles the adaptation of the memoir of one of Israel’s most highly regarded contemporary authors, Amos Oz.
“A Tale” is told through the eyes of young Amos (Amir Tessler). The story revolves around his troubled yet adoring mother (Ms. Portman) who was raised in privilege in her native Poland but struggles to adjust to her life as a poor newcomer in the fledgling nation of Israel.
Tickets for the opening night movie, at the Manor Theatre in Squirrel Hill with a reception after at nearby JCC-Katz Theatre, will be $65 or $18 for full-time students 26 and under, if purchased by noon April 1. After that, all tickets will be $80.
They will go on sale March 16 through JFilmPgh.org or 412-992-5203 weekdays 10 a.m. to noon only. The balance of the film titles will be announced in mid-March.
