Radio Notes: Clear Channel promotes WXDX host

WXDX-FM (105.9) morning host Tim Benz has been promoted to sports director of Clear Channel Media and Entertainment's Pittsburgh stations.

Mr. Benz will oversee sports programming on all six stations (WDVE-FM, WXDX-FM, WKST-FM, WWSW-FM, WPGB-FM and WBGG-AM). He'll do segments about the biggest sports stories of the day on each of the stations and will host a daily show on sports/talk 970 ESPN/WBGG at 2 p.m. weekdays.

Mr. Benz has been morning host at the X since 2006. He'll be replaced in morning drive by WXDX evening host Abby Krizner.

WXDX morning show co-host Bob McLaughlin moves to the job of executive producer for Mark Madden's sports talk show, which airs from 3 to 6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX.

Jazz station specials

Jazz station WYZR-FM (88.1) will air several specials and is adding a new weekend program.

"The Roots of Smooth," hosted by the late Bobby Jackson, explores the roots of smooth jazz through music and commentary. Jackson, a longtime jazz host and educator from Cleveland, died last December. "The Roots of Smooth" will air at 6 p.m. Fridays and 1 p.m. Saturdays.

WYZR will air "Gospel Greats," a three-part series hosted by jazz pianist Cyrus Chestnut. The series will explore music and artists from gospel's beginnings to the present. It airs at 8 a.m. Sunday and Feb. 16 and 23.

"Feeling Good: The Nina Simone Story" is hosted by Ms. Simone's daughter, Lisa Simone Kelly, and looks at the life and work of the singer, pianist and composer. It airs at noon Sunday and at 2 p.m. Feb. 15.

"Mandela: An Audio History" will look at the life and legacy of the late South African leader Nelson Mandela. It airs at 9 a.m. Feb. 16 and at 2 p.m. Feb. 22.

WYZR, which broadcasts from Bethany, W.Va., can be heard in areas south and west of Pittsburgh.
