Pittsburgh CLO has raised $9 million in the private phase of a planned $10 million capital campaign to support initiatives including new work development for the CLO Cabaret and large-scale musicals for the summer season, an update of the Construction Center for the Arts facility and a new physical production for “A Musical Christmas Carol,” now in its 25th year.
The fundraising effort, called “The Next Generation Campaign,” is the second capital campaign in Pittsburgh CLO’s 70-year history.
A public phase to raise the remaining $1 million of the campaign target was announced Tuesday at a reception and performance of CLO Cabaret’s “First Date.”
“Our goal for this $10 million campaign is to ensure Pittsburgh CLO’s legacy as a cultural leader inspiring the next generation of theater audiences and artists, and help us meet our community’s needs in arts education and outreach programs,” executive producer Van Kaplan said Tuesday.
He thanked board members who contributed a total of $3.7 million and the foundation community.
The Richard King Mellon Foundation contributed $2 million and the Heinz Endowments $1 million to support the development of new musicals, and the PNC Foundation added $800,000 for an expansion of Pittsburgh CLO’s Education and Outreach programs.
Besides a new look for “A Musical Christmas Carol,” specific targets for the fundraising include a Festival for New Small Musicals for the CLO Cabaret and possible touring and the development of large-scale musicals for potential inclusion in Pittsburgh CLO’s summer season, including workshops and staged readings open to the public.
Funds also will go to the organization’s Construction Center for the Arts facility in Springdale, where sets are created for Pittsburgh CLO and other regional performing arts organizations, national tours and Broadway.
Pittsburgh CLO is a top investor and producer of new Broadway musicals such as the award-winning hit “An American in Paris.”
The organization’s reach includes Pittsburgh CLO Academy for students ages 3-17 and the creation of the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, featured in the 2012 PBS documentary series “Broadway or Bust,” which Pittsburgh CLO also co-produced.
