Ballet classes geared to autistic students

Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, in collaboration with Autism Connection of PA, offered a month of adaptive dance classes on Sundays for middle school- through high school-age students with autism at the ballet’s headquarters in the Strip District.

Two instructors from the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School led the classes with live piano accompaniment. To gear students up for PBT’s sensory-friendly adaptation of “The Nutcracker” on Dec. 23, the instructors taught the students modified choreography from the ballet, along with creative movement exercises.

The last session is Sunday. Registration is closed, but PBT hopes to hold similar programs in the future. For more information, contact education director Alyssa Herzog Melby at amelby@pittsburghballet.org or 412-454-9105.
