Pittsburgh's dance studios have plenty to celebrate as they begin their annual recital season. It can be "Just Dance" at Dance Showcase or "The Power of Dance" at Janet's Dance Studio, while Wilkins School Community Center will forge a bond in "United We Dance."

Others are celebrating anniversaries, including 20 years at Arena's Performing Arts Centre; 25 years at Michele's Dance Center, Cynthia's School of Dance and Stephanie Lopez's Movements in Dance; and 35 years at Lisa DiGorio School of Dance.

Viewers of the Lifetime network's reality TV show "Dance Moms" noted the passing of Abby Lee Miller's mother. Ms. Miller will commemorate her life in "The Story of Maryen Lorrain: One for the History Books." Meanwhile, Karen Prunzik's Broadway Dance Studio will honor longtime entertainment icons Shirley Temple and Dick Clark's "American Bandstand" in "Broadway & Beyond."

Some are just making their debuts on the recital scene, such as Kelsey's Dance & Fitness and Allegro Ballet, run by Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre principal dancer Nurlan Abougaliev and wife Aygul, a former member of the company.

The Abougalievs demonstrate PBT's growing influence in the area, including former soloist Jean Gedeon's Pittsburgh Youth Ballet, which will feature George Balanchine's "Western Symphony" and "Dance of the Hours"; former soloist Elizabeth Mackin's Wexford Dance Academy, which will bring in noted student ballet choreographer Maris Battaglia from the Chautauqua Institution; Lindsay and Steven Piper's Ballet Academy of Pittsburgh, with highlights from "Coppelia" and New York City Ballet artistic director Peter Martins' "Eight Easy Pieces"; and former principal dancer Kwang-suk Choi's Pittsburgh Ballet House.

Dance Workshop by Shari is expanding in another way when it collects nonperishable food items for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank during its recital, "Dance Out Loud." These students, who also have been raising money for Children's Hospital Free Care Fund the past 10 years, find unity in the community, a noteworthy movement in itself.
