If you've noticed that Pittsburgh is in stitches here and there, it's all tied to the world premiere of "Flashdance the Musical." The pre-Broadway national tour, starring Pittsburgher Matthew Hydzik and Emily Padgett, will be at Heinz Hall Jan. 1-6.

The show, with familiar songs from the movie and new tunes, will feature nods to big-screen moments that have become embedded in pop culture and 1980s style, such as Jennifer Beals in torn sweatshirt and leg warmers.

That's where Project: Leg Warmer comes in. Participants from the East Liberty store Natural Stitches have been providing our local dinosaur friends with leg warmers. Knitters and crocheters using yarn donated by Cascade Yarns of Tukwila, Wash., have been engaged in "yarn bombing" -- decorating light poles at Heinz Hall and outfitting dino-statues in PPG Place and the Art Institute with legwear, a reminder of the trend-setting 1980s film version of "Flashdance," which was shot in Pittsburgh.

For information and to participate, visit trustarts.org/knit and download the leg-warmer pattern or use a favorite DIY pattern.
