The 13th annual B-PEP Jazz Concert musical “fun-raiser” for the Black Political Empowerment Project, or B-PEP, will be held at the Wyndham Pittsburgh University Center, 100 Lytton Ave. in Oakland, from 5:30-11:30 p.m. This year’s jazz extravaganza features more than 60 Pittsburgh musicians and vocalists. The host bands will include Roger Humphries & the R H Factor and the Tim Stevens Project. The event also will feature many traditional area jazz artists including Don Aliquo Sr., Etta Cox, Michele Bensen, Bridgette Perdue and Jimmy Sapienza, just to name a few. Visiting artist Katherine Tzu-Lan Mann will give a free public lecture at 6 p.m. in the Kresge Center, University Commons, Carlow University campus, Oakland. The daughter of a foreign service officer, Ms. Mann traveled the world as a child and has lived in Taiwan, Korea, Israel and Beijing and Guangzhou in China. She now lives in Washington, D.C. and is an instructor at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Her work, which she describes as, “abstract, monumental, fantastical landscapes,” has been exhibited across the country as well as in the U.S. consulate in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, and the U.S. embassy in Yaounde, Cameroon. A free public opening reception for “Marx@200” will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at SPACE gallery, 812 Liberty Ave., Downtown. The project explores Karl Marx’s continued influence at the time of his bicentennial and is presented by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and Carnegie Mellon University’s Humanities Center. More than 25 works by artists from around the world represent a diverse range of perspectives on Marx and his critique of inequality and capitalism, as well as his influence on political movements and regimes. Storyteller Motoko appears at City of Asylum @ Alphabet City, 40 W. North Ave., North Side, at 3 p.m., as part of the children’s storyteller series highlighting tales from around the globe. Pittsburgh Opera will host a free brown bag concert at noon at the opera’s headquarters in the Strip, 2425 Liberty Ave. The performance is open to all and will last one hour — attendees are welcome to bring a lunch.
