The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland has announced a list of nominees for 2015 induction that includes Green Day, Nine Inch Nails, Lou Reed and Sting.
The full list of nominees:
• The Paul Butterfield Blues Band
• Green Day
• Joan Jett & the Blackhearts
• The Marvelettes
• Nine Inch Nails
• Lou Reed
• The Smiths
• The Spinners
• Stevie Ray Vaughan
• Bill Withers
Green Day and Nine Inch Nails (fronted by Mercer native Trent Reznor) are the two artists nominated in their first year of eligibility. For eligibility, nominees had to release their first recording no later than 1989. It is also the first time on the ballot for The Smiths, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Bill Withers and Sting.
This would be the second entry for Sting, who was inducted as part of The Police in 2003, and the late Lou Reed, inducted with The Velvet Underground in 1996.
“We are pleased to present this group of nominees, as they represent the myriad places where rock and roll converges with blues, electronic, dance, Motown, R&B, funk and other genres,” Joel Peresman, president and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, said in a statement. "Rock and roll incorporates the styles of so many different kinds of music and that’s what makes this group of nominees – and this art form – so powerful and unique.”
Ballots will be sent to an international voting body of more than 700 artists, historians and members of the music industry.
The Hall again will allow fans to participate in the induction selection process. Beginning today and continuing through Dec. 9, fans can visit www.rockhall.com, www.rollingstone.com, and www.usatoday.com to cast votes for who they believe to be most deserving of induction into the Hall of Fame. The top five artists, as selected by the public, will comprise a “fans’ ballot” that will be tallied along with the other ballots to choose the 2015 inductees.
The five inductees will be announced in December.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony will be held on April 18 in Cleveland.
