Audiences gift 'Hobbit' with top box office spot

The numbers are still being tallied, but this might have been the second biggest Christmas Day ever at the movies, behind 2009, when "Sherlock Holmes" opened with a record $24.6 million on Christmas Day and lifted all box-office boats.

Credit a combination of new movies, popular holdovers and indie hits, says Paul Dergarabedian of Rentrak, which supplied these box office estimates for Christmas Day (in millions):

1. "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" .................................. $9.32.

2. "The Wolf of Wall Street" ........................................................ $9.15.

3. "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues" ................................. $8.1.

4. "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" ...................................... $7.813.

5. "American Hustle" ................................................................ $7.4.

6. "47 Ronin" ........................................................................... $7.031.

7. "Frozen" ............................................................................... $6.354.

8. "Saving Mr. Banks" ........................................................... $5.133.

9. "Grudge Match" ............................................................... $3.965.

10. "Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas" ........................... $2.964.

Also: "Justin Bieber's Believe," opened outside the top 12 with $1.25 million.
