If you’re among the many who loved the Pixar movie “Coco,” mark your calendars to expand the experience at a local Day of the Dead observation in November.
For years, Mexico Lindo owner Lisa DiGioia-Nutini created a Day of the Dead ofrenda, or altar, in the windows of her Squirrel Hill shop to honor loved ones and others who died within the preceding year.
In 2002, she started a virtual store, Mexico Lindo Mercado y Galeria de Artesanas, and in 2004, opened a storefront on Murray Avenue with her husband, Jean-Pierre Nutini. Mr. Nutini died in 2013 and in March 2017, Ms. DiGioia-Nutini closed the storefront but maintained a limited virtual presence and continued to serve regular clients.
Recently, she has begun the re-design of the South Side space once occupied by Ibiza restaurant. In March, a grand opening is planned for it to become a larger iteration of the Mexican restaurant La Palapa.
Artwork by some of Mexico’s finest artisans will complement the menu, and in November Ms. DiGioia-Nutini plans to renew the tradition of constructing an ofrenda in the new space.
