Recruiting: DB opts for Ohio State

Recruiting: DB opts for Ohio State

Woodland Hills player to reveal his decision today

Woodland Hills High School receiver-defensive back Devon Lyons will hold a news conference tonight to announce his college choice and the winner appears to be Ohio State.

Lyons said last night he will choose between Ohio State and Miami. But friends and others close to Lyons said he will probably announce for Ohio State.

"But I've been telling different people different things, just to throw them off," Lyons said.

Lyons said his father, Wes, wants him to go to Miami.

"We'll see what happens," Devon said.

The news conference will be at a restaurant in Station Square, and Lyons and his family are trying to make the event a spectacle. Lyons said five members of his family will wear five different T-shirts to the event. Each shirt will have the name of his five finalists. They are Michigan State, Notre Dame, Michigan, Miami and Ohio State.

Pitt recruits still wavering

While Lyons' announcement will end his recruiting saga, the recruiting soap operas of Penn Hills' Anthony Morelli and North Hills' Andrew Johnson will continue. Both players committed to Pitt last summer, but decided recently to look elsewhere. Morelli will choose between Pitt and Penn State. Johnson will decide among Pitt, Miami and Florida. He said last night Ohio State is no longer in the picture.

Some of Pitt's coaches met with Morelli and his father, Greg, at a Pittsburgh restaurant last Thursday. Penn State coach Joe Paterno, his son, Jay, Penn State's quarterbacks coach, and defensive coordinator Tom Bradley visited with Morelli and his father Saturday night. The meeting was at the home of another member of Morelli's family.

Greg Morelli said last night, "Anthony and I are going to watch the Super Bowl at a family member's house and we're going to discuss the decision."

Morelli has not planned on having a news conference. He will simply sign of letter of intent with Pitt or Penn State Wednesday, the first day high school seniors can sign with a college.

Greg Morelli said things were "crazy" at his home yesterday. He hinted that Anthony might speak to Dan Marino about his decision.

Johnson, meanwhile, visited Miami and Florida over the past five days. He said he won't announce his decision until Wednesday.

Elsewhere in Pitt recruiting, receiver Johnny Peyton of Dade City, Fla., will probably decide today between Pitt and South Florida. Peyton committed to Pitt in the fall, but visited Penn State and West Virginia over the past five days. Peyton's mother said last night her son is not considering the Nittany Lions or Mountaineers.

Marvis to Indiana

Hempfield linebacker Mike Marvis made a verbal commitment to Maryland last summer, but committed this past weekend to Indiana of the Big Ten Conference.

Marvis decided to look elsewhere because Maryland told him in December it didn't want him to enroll until January of next year. Marvis didn't like the idea.

Indiana offered Marvis a scholarship last spring and Hempfield coach Bo Ruffner called the Hoosiers last Monday to see if they would still be interested. Marvis visited this past weekend and committed.

Buzzelli to Fordham

Elsewhere in WPIAL recruiting, Baldwin offensive lineman Ryan Buzzelli committed to Fordham.
