Pitt prioritizing how it unveils script logo

While Pitt’s athletic department is set for a radical makeover this spring and summer, some areas of the department might have to wait a bit longer.

The Panthers will unveil their new script uniforms — for all sports — and merchandise in May, athletic director Scott Barnes said today. Over the next few months, the university will focus on converting “high-visibility” block logos to script.

The most noticeable being the mid-court logo at the Petersen Events Center.

“We’re going to start with those high-visibility areas first,” Barnes said. “The Petersen floor, right? The logo on the football field, all we do in media.”

Overall, though, Pitt’s athletic department has put together a three-year plan to convert block logos in signage and facilities over to the script.

“There’s some other things where that block Pitt is etched in stone,” Barnes said. “Some of that, you won’t even change out.

“What we’ve done is we’ve created a plan based on priorities.”

Barnes said his department has been crafting this plan, as well as a merchandising strategy for the new gear, over the past several months. The one constant, he noted, was how universally beloved the script logo is among the Pitt community.

“A lot of times, that logo change is polarizing,” he said. “Half the people like it, half don’t. There’s a dogfight. I have not met anybody that does not like this Pitt script. It’s just phenomenal.”
