Pirates pre-game notes: Mercer, Locke dealing with injuries

MILWAUKEE — Manager Clint Hurdle removed Jordy Mercer from the lineup before Thursday’s game because of discomfort in his right forearm.

Mercer has dealt with forearm tightness before, in August 2014. He got Sunday off, before Monday’s off day.

“He’s been playing through it for a while,” Hurdle said.

Sean Rodriguez played shortstop and Adam Frazier played second base.

Starling Marte returned to the lineup, batting second. He had not played since Sept.5 until Wednesday, when he pinch-hit and struck out looking.

Jeff Locke has not pitched since Sept. 10 because he was dealing with some shoulder discomfort. He threw 74 pitches Sept. 5, then 39 four days later, and said his shoulder did not bounce back like it usually does. He said he and the team used the expanded rosters in September to create some time down without needing a DL trip, and he is good to go now.
