PHOENIX -- The Diamondbacks put Paul Goldschmidt on the disabled list today because of a broken left ring finger, the result of an Ernesto Frieri fastball in the ninth inning of Friday’s game.
The incident caused Diamondbacks first-base coach Dave McKay to yell at Russell Martin and the two teams gathered as Martin approached McKay, but nothing further happened.
“The Pirates are a staff that probably pitches inside as much as or more than anybody,” Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said.
The Pirates have hit 61 batters this season, the most in MLB and 13 more than the second-place team.
Frieri apologized to Goldschmidt while speaking with reporters and said he did not intend to hit him. He used to live on the outer half until coming to the Pirates, who had him start working inside more.
“I love it,” he said. “Don’t get me wrong, I love it. I’m going to keep doing it. I’m going to keep throwing inside, I’m going to keep throwing all my pitches. You need to move the hitter’s eyes. If you stay one way, you’re going to get hurt.
”My ERA is like 100 point something. I don’t want to be putting people on base right now.“
Hurdle said the Pirates would not stop throwing inside late in a game that was no longer close. He has preached owning the inner half since joining the organization prior to the 2011 season.
”Guys get hit. It’s part of the game,“ Goldschmidt said. ”I think he’s probably trying to make a pitch and missed his spot a little bit and it ends up getting in, so it’s just part of it.“
***Hurdle said Gerrit Cole threw a bullpen session with Class AAA Indianapolis today that went well, according to conversations with Indy manager Dean Treanor and special assistant to the GM Jim Benedict. They will see how he feels Sunday and decide on his next step from there.
”He’s trying to find a way to get back to feeling what he’s felt before he had the initial setback,“ Hurdle said. ”Repeating the delivery, the different feels of the slider slot, the curveball slot, the changeup. And basically that’s it. There’s no more than that. There’s no smoke and mirrors going on here, there’s no trickery going on here. We’ve told him we want him to take the appropriate time and be honest in his evaluation of what he’s feeling, how the ball’s coming out of his hand, so when he gets back here, he’s able to throw it in the gear he wants to throw it into and get after it.“
