Even though President-elect Joe Biden has resoundingly won by a full 3 percentage points, what does the more than 70 million votes for President Donald Trump mean? Why did they vote for Mr. Trump? The nation should pay attention to these citizens.
Undoubtedly, some have been squeezed out of the American dream and have lost hope for themselves and their children. Since they have lost any faith in Congress, they have shifted their faith to a “strongman” and an exciting rally movement where they can belong.
Some probably feel that sex roles, sexual orientations, reproductive rights and family structures have changed too much and too rapidly.
Others are attracted to force, violence, a macho use of guns and are repulsed and threatened by people who are different than them; white nationalism is their answer to all problems.
Apparently many, both of modest means and those of wealth, see their economic interests best served by Mr. Trump, and disparage a place for the commonweal.
I am sure of one thing: Many Trump voters are fine people and many of them are my good neighbors. We both share a belief in faith, nation, family, hard work, honesty and service.
I would hope for two big things in the coming administration. I would like to see those who have been left behind folded back into the rich opportunities that should prevail for all. And second, I would like to see the nation prosper in a way that all citizens could participate fairly in the responsibilities and benefits of a thriving democratic nation.
