Abusers had no fear of consequences

The Roman Catholic Church, several times throughout its history, has experienced tribulation and turmoil. None has been more damaging than the report brought forth by this state’s attorney general that exposed pedophile priests within the Catholic church.

Pedophilia has been so prevalent and pervasive that it is nearly beyond belief. These are priests who, through ordination, had taken vows to be followers of Christ and promote teachings of the Catholic Church. The question tormenting Catholics is “why?” Why would priests, in such large numbers, commit such heinous acts as to sodomize their victims knowing how grievous the sin? Perhaps they are not really priests but perverse individuals who have used the church as the perfect haven. What better place to hide; to masquerade as priests. These pseudo-priests may be agnostic or atheist. They may be mentally ill or just plain evil.

Whatever the reason, there was apparently no fear of consequence. Lawsuits continue to be filed alleging sexual abuse. It will be up to the Catholic clergy and judicial system to bring justice to all of those victimized. This calamity, as damaging and embarrassing as it may be, will not be the demise of the Roman Catholic Church. Through a long and painful process, the church eventually will be cleansed and will be rid of this misery. For all Catholics who have been spiritually shaken, know that “this too shall pass.”
