Students in a Woodland Hills elementary school will move to remote learning for part of next week after a transformer explosion caused damage to the building, district officials said.
According to a letter from Superintendent Daniel Castagna, the explosion occurred Thursday near Wilkins Elementary STEAM Academy. The building, he said, sustained fire and smoke damage. The extent of the damage was not immediately clear.
The incident and subsequent damage were assessed by Firewater Restoration, the district’s emergency response contractor. The company, with guidance from Duquesne Light, released a cleanup plan, which includes moving Wilkins Elementary students to remote learning next week.
All district students are off on Monday for Presidents Day. Wilkins Elementary students will not have school Tuesday. The building will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. that day so families can pick up Chromebooks and other materials needed for online learning, which is scheduled for Wednesday through Friday. All other district buildings will return to in-person classes Tuesday.
“Thank you,” Mr. Castagna wrote, “for your understanding and cooperation as we work through this unfortunate circumstance.”
