The start of school in the Plum Borough School District has been delayed until Sept. 4 because of "recently identified air quality concerns" at Plum High School and Oblock Junior High School.
Officials were made aware Friday of three rooms at the high school that contained mold on some surfaces. Preliminary tests revealed the mold was non-hazardous, but the air quality in two rooms was considered degraded. Eight classrooms at the Oblock school also need to be remediated, the district said.
Students in grades 1-12 had been scheduled to return to class Tuesday.
"We recognize this will be an inconvenience and appreciate your patience, but the Plum Borough School District will always place the safety of our students and staff as its number one priority," the district said in a statement on its Facebook page.
"The reason for the postponed start is to allow air sample testing in all of our buildings and professional cleaning if it is deemed necessary," the statement said.
Officials said revisions to the 2018-19 school calendar are being made and will be posted on the district website over the next 48 hours.
