The head of The Ellis School resigned abruptly Tuesday, causing a shift among leaders at the independent school for girls in Shadyside.
A. Randol "Randie" Benedict resigned effective immediately to pursue other interests, said Kitty Julian, Ellis' director of marketing and communications.
The school would not elaborate further on personnel-related matters other than appointments following this change in leadership, Ms. Julian said.
Following Ms. Benedict's departure, Robin Newham was appointed interim head of the school for girls ages 3 through grade 12. She served as the director of the Upper School since 1998 and had joined Ellis in 1981.
"[Ms.] Newham has been a longtime member of the Ellis community, and she has great respect in the community of students, alumnae and parents," Ms. Julian said.
Despite a change in leadership, the school will continue to work from the strategic plan, mission, vision and values implemented Aug. 29, she said.
The plan extends through 2017 and emphasizes re-envisioning the academic program, developing students' confidence and competence, and wellness and athletics.
Ellis Parents Association president Susie Wilojanapa said the group would release a statement to families Thursday, but said of the change, "It's a strategic move forward for the school. It's an exciting time."
Other changes in leadership include Lauren Laschon's move to interim head of the Upper School and Norma Greco as dean of faculty.
Ms. Benedict had been the school's leader since July 1, 2009. She did not respond to a request for comment Tuesday.
