A Community College of Allegheny County student on Tuesday received preliminary approval from student government to form a recognized campus chapter of an organization that advocates for the right to carry concealed firearms on campus.
Christine "Christa" Brashier complained last spring that the school and its Allegheny campus tried to stop her from organizing a chapter of the national group, Students for Concealed Carry on Campus. A review that followed the controversy led CCAC to announce it would no longer require prior review of student handouts.
David Hoovler, a CCAC spokesman, said student government is expected to grant final approval on March 2, pending two changes to the group's application that Mr. Hoovler said Ms. Brashier has agreed to make. He said one is to remove a provision to collect membership dues, since the group would receive student activity money, and the other removes CCAC from liability for group members' activities off campus such as discharging firearms at a shooting range.
