Moon still searching for superintendent

Moon still searching for superintendent

Moon Area school directors will try for the third time at 7 p.m. Monday to hire a superintendent.

The district is without its top two administrators -- Superintendent Alex Meta retired Friday and Assistant Superintendent Bille Rondinelli has left for Pine-Richland School District.

And, a third -- Director of Administrative Services Ron Zangaro -- has been hired by the Shaler Area School District, although he will remain in Moon to help administrators until a new superintendent is hired.

In addition to considering Baldwin-Whitehall Superintendent Donna K. Milanovich as its new superintendent, school board president Mark Limbruner said directors Monday night also will name an acting superintendent and consider a candidate for assistant superintendent.

Last Thursday, school directors Peggy Bell and Mary Tobin postponed the hiring of Baldwin-Whitehall Supt. Dr. Donna K. Milanovich -- the board's second choice -- by filing an injunction in Common Pleas Court on the basis of a technicality that proper procedures were not followed.

The injunction, granted by Judge Ronald Folino, allows the board to reconvene after posting proper notice. Monday is the earliest the meeting could be held.

Mr. Limbruner signed and sent letters to the board regarding the hiring of the superintendent. Some of the addresses on the envelopes were wrong. Board Secretary Tobin was at work when Mr. Limbruner signed the documents.

Mrs. Tobin is under a court order to sign the necessary documents prior to Monday's meeting. The notices will be mailed both registered mail and first class to each of the board members.

Directors Bell and Tobin filed the first injunction May 24 to block the hiring of Dr. C. Russell Mayo, deputy superintendent of Allentown School District. That injunction was based on the idea that the five-year employment contract could become a financial strain on the district.

They also objected because the hiring would be made by board members who will comprise the majority only until December when the power will shift and they will become minority members based on results from the May Primary election.

At last Thursday's meeting, a motion to appoint Mr. Zangaro as an interim superintendent failed. He and Alan Bennett, director of fiscal and school services, will make administrative decisions for the district until a superintendent is hired.
