Features planned for South Fayette's Fairview Park include two multipurpose athletic fields, a concession stand, restrooms and a 48- by 100-foot pavilion with a kitchen.
Commissioners unanimously awarded a $54,400 contract April 16 to Mackin Engineering, of Findlay, to design the six-acre project.
"If we can throw in a playground, we will," parks and recreation Director Jerry Males said.
He said the pavilion would be for rent and would accommodate large groups. Plans include an access road that runs through an unused portion of the Mayview State Hospital property.
Mr. Males said the park would be geared to active recreation. "It's not going to be the park where you go and commune with nature," he said.
He hoped to finish the design and advertise for construction bids by November, and finish work by summer of next year.
The project is the second phase of a long-term, $700,000 effort to develop the 125-acre park. Fairview Park, on Boyce Road, already has trails, baseball fields, picnic facilities, tennis and basketball courts, and pavilions. The first phase added parking, infrastructure and an athletic field.
Some funding of the projects will come from a $300,000 grant from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and an $83,000 grant from the state Department of Economic Development.
