More than 45,000 Allegheny County property owners have filed formal challenges to their new assessments, with hundreds, if not thousands, more yet to be tabulated.
The deadline for filing appeals was Monday, and a final total should be available by the end of the week, according to a county spokeswoman.
County residents also have asked the Office of Property Assessment to hear more than 68,000 informal appeals of the new real estate values. Many of the people who brought informal challenges also filed formal appeals, and some may drop those second challenges if they are satisfied by the results of their first hearings.
All informal appeals must be completed by June 1 with the results mailed to property owners by July 31.
The state Supreme Court ordered the county to reassess, finding that its 2002 base-year system was unconstitutional. The justices found that it unfairly taxed residents who purchased real estate more recently or who lived in communities where property values rose slowly or declined.
