New park in Ross may have tails along with trails

People may be allowed to bring dogs to the newest park in Ross.

The new park — Short Line Hollow Park on Cemetery Lane adjacent to the township’s public works facility — consists of walking and biking trails and will have its grand opening from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 21.

Township commissioners on Monday introduced an amendment that would provide the “mechanism” to allow dogs in the park, commissioners President Jeremy Shaffer said.

No specifics have been decided on what restrictions might be placed on dogs, and commissioners would still have to amend the rules for an individual park. They are expected to vote on the amendment on Oct. 16.

No other parks in Ross are being considered for the change to allow dogs.

A crime prevention meeting focusing on Halloween safety will be held at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 19 in the township building.

The township will host a public meeting on how to make the township friendlier for pedestrians and bicyclists. The meeting will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Nov. 5 in the township building.

Michael Baker International is consulting with the township on pedestrian and bike safety, and its work is funded by grants from the Redevelopment Authority of Allegheny County, the county Health Department and the Richard King Mellon Foundation.

Commissioners agreed to donate the township’s share of a piece of property on Jacks Run Road to the county. The property had been taken over for back taxes and was jointly owned by the county, township and North Hills School District.

The county Department of Public Works needs the property to store supplies and equipment for the replacement of the Jacks Run Bridge. The school district donated its portion last month.
