Three members of a gang that once terrorized North Side neighborhoods were sentenced today as one of the region's large drug-racketeering cases approaches an end.
Twenty-seven members of the Brighton Place/Northview Heights Crips gang were charged in February 2010 with crimes including membership in a racketeering influenced corrupt organization that relied on violence and threats to protect its drug sales territory. Now 24 have been sentenced.
Terrance Clark, 23, was sentenced to 12 years and 10 months in prison. He was previously sentenced to seven years for pointing a gun at law enforcement officers, and has been in state prison for burglary for the past four years, so he is in the midst of a nearly 24-year stay in various lockups.
Lamon Street, 20, faces 10 years in prison. His attorney said he wants to be trained in welding, carpentry and business management while incarcerated.
He also faces state charges of homicide and homicide of an unborn child stemming from the 2009 shooting of pregnant college student Shavaughn Wallace, who was 18. Trial is currently scheduled for Jan. 3.
"I've got nothing to say," said Mr. Street, after U.S. District Judge Gustave Diamond invited him to speak on his own behalf.
Hosea Ghafoor, 28, received an 18-month sentence, including six months at a halfway house and a year of home detention. He appeared before Judge Diamond in a wheelchair as a result of a 2009 shooting that left him paralyzed from the waist down.
"In some ways, he's paid a rather heavy price for the lifestyle he's led," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles A. Eberle, who prosecuted all three men.
"The court believes that adequate punishment has already been visited on this defendant and will likely be with him for life," said Judge Diamond.
