Springdale man ruled competent for trial

An Allegheny County judge ruled yesterday that a Springdale man charged with more than 40 felonies is competent to stand trial, despite what a psychologist called his "delusions" about the government and the court system.

Eric Miskovitch, 32, will stand trial Feb. 2, Common Pleas Judge David R. Cashman ruled. Mr. Miskovitch was arrested in 2004 after a six-day rampage in Pittsburgh and surrounding suburbs. He faces numerous charges, including armed robbery, car theft and aggravated assault.

Mr. Miskovitch's court-appointed attorney, James Walsh, said his client has a "deluded view of the legal system" and is refusing to cooperate with his defense.

Dr. Bruce Wright, who examined Mr. Miskovitch for the prosecution, testified that Mr. Miskovitch believes that the government and the court system are corrupt and that he could never get a fair trial.

Still, Dr. Wright concurred with Dr. Christine Martone of Allegheny County Behavioral Health and said that Mr. Miskovitch was competent to stand trial because he is capable of assisting with his defense.
