The Hampton School District has established an additional first grade class at Central Elementary that will be composed mostly of Poff Elementary students to solve a temporary space problem.
The Poff students will be transported by the district from their bus stops directly to Central Elementary.
Earlier this month, Michael Mooney, Poff's principal, sent a letter to parents of first-grade students, pointing out that construction at the school has reduced usable space, and first-grade classes are larger than usual this year.
The school board agreed to permit Poff first-grade students to voluntarily attend Central Elementary School for the year. Parents were asked to respond by Aug. 11 so that a plan could be determined at the board's meeting that evening.
Parents of 14 students volunteered to have their first-grader attend Central for one year. The students will share a classroom, along with other Central students.
The District will mail letters to parents regarding transportation details.
