The Hampton Community Association has donated $55,000 to the township for construction costs associated with the new veterans memorial, which was finished this month near the entrance to the Hampton Community Center.
The memorial cost about $166,000, so the community association's contribution will cover nearly a third of that.
Harold Sarver, chairman of the nonprofit association, said money was raised through various methods, including a sock hop, state grants, aluminum can collections, donations from community organizations and individuals, and the brick-paver program.
The bricks, which individuals can buy to honor any veteran, provide a pathway to the memorial. As of July 1, 120 bricks containing the names of veterans had been sold. They cost $150 for one, $250 for two, or $500 for four.
Bricks are still available for purchase. For more information, go to the township's Web site at www.hampton-pa.org.
Hampton council thought it was important to have a special spot in the township to honor the area's military veterans, said council President Victor Son.
A veterans memorial had been located off Mount Royal Boulevard near Route 8, and now its plaques have been removed and added to the new memorial.
Mr. Son said that the Veterans Memorial Court project was made possible through a unique community-service partnership in which businesses, community-service organizations and the township worked together. The township received donations of skilled labor, construction equipment and material, cash and volunteer hours.
Mr. Sarver agreed that the memorial is the result of community involvement.
