Butler Memorial Park may get a larger shelter to replace the Miller Shelter by Memorial Day.
"I don't think we want anyone to use the old one because it's unsafe," Councilwoman Kathy Kline said Tuesday at council's agenda-setting meeting.
The 50-year-old shelter was fenced off about a year ago, said John Evans, zoning and code officer.
The city opened two bids last Thursday to remove and replace the facility. The bids came in higher than the $15,000 Ms. Kline originally proposed.
P&W Construction Co., of Prospect, submitted the lowest bid of $21,450 for a 42-foot-by-20-foot shelter and an alternate bid of $22,700 for a 48-foot-by-20-foot shelter.
Council is expected to vote tonight on the contract, which calls for engineered drawings, demolition, removal of the concrete slab and site restoration.
Specifications require completion within 60 days.
The project will be paid for out of the refund the city got from the bond refinancing, Councilman James Kraus said.
Also at the Tuesday meeting, Ms. Kline said Pashek Associates, of Pittsburgh, the consultant hired to do the feasibility study on reopening Butler Memorial Park Pool, expects to begin the study late next week.
Council meets at 7 tonight in the city building on West North Street.
