New Virtual Block Watch program to be unveiled in Carrick

City officials announced today their plans to unveil a new Virtual Block Watch program in the city's Carrick neighborhood on Friday.

It will be at 10 a.m. in the Sankey parking lot on Brownsville Road.

The Carrick block watch will serve as a pilot program for the city, a release from the office of Councilwoman Natalia Rudiak, who represents the area, said.

Those involved include the Pittsburgh police department, Carrick-Overbrook Block Watch members, Carrick community council members, Ms. Rudiak and the Zone 3 Public Safety Committee. Groups in the neighborhood will partner with the city's police department to acquire video surveillance, the release said.

Roving groups of teenagers have caused disturbances in recent months at Monroeville Mall and at Kennywood, above, where some teens gathered near the McDonald’s after a disturbance closed the park early on May 2.

"A Virtual Block Watch brings residents and business owners together in attempt to prevent crime and improves the quality of life in local communities," the release said.

Last week groups of brawling teenagers in Carrick forced the St. Basil Catholic Parish summer festival to shut down early out of fear for public safety.
