Gala Cubana! raises funds for Pittsburgh Festival Opera

Where and when: Saturday night at the Pittsburgh Golf Club, Squirrel Hill.

All the party details: The Pittsburgh Festival Opera (formerly known as the Opera Theater of Pittsburgh) welcomed more than 150 guests to a Cuba-inspired fundraiser. Guests enjoyed a VIP rum tasting featuring Maggie's Farm Rum before digging into fish wrapped in banana leaves and other Cuban delicacies prepared by chef Mike Wagner. Orchids displayed in Cuban cigar boxes were the creative centerpieces, but the highlight of the evening was the performances, including a joyful Afro-Cuban dance piece, “Ochun” (the goddess of love) performed by Teanna Medina during dinner. Guests, who helped raise $25,000, then kicked upf their heels and danced to the rhythms of the Guaracha Latin Dance Band led by Miguel Sague III.

#SEEN: Clement George with Rita Zambelina, event chair Carolyn Smith with husband Bud, board chairman Dr. Eugene N. Myers with wife Barbara, Joseph Bilecki, Dan and Carole Kamin, Lisa Valanti, Dr. James R. Sohovey and Nicholas M. Miskovsky and Demareus Cooper and Lana Neumyer, a fashion designer who featured her one-of-a-kind pieces throughout the evening. Also #SEEN were company founder and board member Mildred Miller Posvar with children Wesley Posvar Jr., Marina Posvar and Lisa Rossi; David and Gail Mosites, Kip and Desiree Soteres, artistic director Jonathan Eaton with Gwen McDonald, associate artistic director Joel Goodloe, music director Robert Frankenberry as Fidel Castro, singer Christopher Scott as Che Guevara and Stephanie Ramos, who performed three traditional Cuban songs.
