After Sunday’s new moon, our closest neighbor in space has been moving east, away from the sun. Its path along the ecliptic and through the zodiac will take it past three planets in our evening sky this week.
Wednesday evening a very young thin crescent moon can be seen 12 degrees above the southwestern horizon 45 minutes after sunset. The crescent moon will sit just above fainter Saturn and 6 degrees to the right of stunning Venus. The moon will continue to move away from the sun and the horizon this week, climbing past Venus Thursday night and Mars by Sunday night.
Look for the wafer-thin waxing crescent Thursday evening 45 minutes after sunset, 20 degrees above the southwestern horizon and 10 degrees above dazzling bright Venus. By Saturday evening the crescent moon will have climbed into Sagittarius and sit about 7 degrees to the right of Mars. Look for the moon in Capricorn on Sunday evening, 6 degrees above and to the right of Mars.
