'Geek Monthly' isn't just for sci-fi nerds

'Geek Monthly' isn't just for sci-fi nerds

A magazine that debates the "Nerdiquette" of using curse words from the sci-fi-verse in public? It could only be Geek Monthly. The relative newcomer from the publishers of Cinefastique has featured Rainn Wilson ("The Office"), Kristen Bell ("Veronica Mars"), Mary Lynn Rajskub ("24") and, this month, Greg Grunberg ("Heroes") on its first four covers.

Among its tidbits and blog-like entries, the print magazine sends May readers to brunching.com/metalortrek.html, a site that lists episode titles from "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episodes and the names of Christian heavy metal bands and asks visitors if they can tell the two apart.

There's some tech stuff, but Geek Monthly is mostly a haven for pop culture cultists like Richard Kraft, agent to some of Hollywood's top composers who is profiled here as a collector of kitsch that would have done Andy Warhol proud.

From an examination of "Star Wars" at 30 (hard to miss in any genre mag this month) to a profile of rebel Skyler Tennen, founder of the controversial Web site SchoolScandals.com, this new mag revels in geekiness with a cause: to woo fellow geeks.
