Fall wheels into Phipps

Fall wheels into Phipps

It seems fall has been a long time coming, but it's here now, and nowhere is that more evident than at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. The Fall Flower Show opens today and continues through Nov. 1.

The historic glass houses in Oakland are once again full of colorful chrysanthemums, which have been an integral part of this seasonal display since 1893. The theme of this year's show is the color wheel, and display horticulturist Laura Schoch has designed the show's many arrangements to bring the vibrancy of the color wheel to life.

As always, the stars are the myriad types and colors of chrysanthemums. New is the Garden Railroad "Prehistoric Park," a whimsical world where reckless efforts to bring dinosaurs back to life go awry. Think "Jurassic Park" in miniature.

The show is open daily 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. and until 10 p.m. on Fridays. Admission is $15 for adults, $14 for seniors (age 62 and older), $14 for students with valid ID, $11 for children ages 2-18 and free for Phipps members and children under 2.
