As the dog days of summer set in, embrace them by heating up your style!
In August, there are plenty of things to do to help reinvigorate your fashion for the fresh month ahead. Here are some of Stylebook’s top picks ...
What to do: Five days of fashion-focused events are on tap Aug. 12-16 as part of the third annual Style Week Pittsburgh. There will be runway shows spotlighting Pittsburgh-based and international designers, an awards show saluting style influencers, a pop-up vendors fair in Market Square, a brunch en blanc, and much more. Go to styleweekpittsburgh.com to find an event near you.
Suit up! Swim trends to try: Does your swimsuit need a style boost? Channel some inspiration from the ones recently spotted on the runways of the annual Miami Swim Week. Although the selections seen there are for spring/summer ’16, why wait until then to incorporate some of those looks into your pool-side style? A few to try now: pairing statement jewelry like an oversized necklace to spice up a swimsuit or caftan, adding a pop of color (a vibrant citrus shade, for example) to a darker suit, or stepping up your beach bag game with one that’s eye-catching with embroidery, beads or sequins. Plus, good news: next summer’s swimwear trends encompass everything from itsy bitsy bikinis to figure-flattering maillots, with an emphasis on cover-ups of all kinds to take looks from the street to the beach.
Collaboration to check out: Pittsburgh’s own dancing diva Maddie Ziegler seems to be popping up everywhere these days — and not just on stage. The star on Lifetime’s reality TV show “Dance Moms” is one of fashion’s latest “it” girls, landing spreads in dance and fashion magazines alike. One of her latest gigs: being the face of the new Capezio x Betsey Johnson capsule collection. The dance-meets-activewear line includes pretty pink lace tops, punk-inspired lace-up leg warmers, fun printed pieces and, of course, the designer’s signature tutus. Not a dancer? No problem. Many pieces are versatile enough to be worn as everyday street or workout clothes.
Maddie wears them well in the campaign, which can be seen at capezio.com. “I fell in love with Maddie and her dancing when I met her at the ‘Dancing With the Stars’ reunion,” Ms. Johnson told Teen Vogue.
New spot to shop: Dick’s Sporting Goods is slated to open at Ross Park Mall in August the Chelsea Collective, a women’s fitness and lifestyle boutique with an aesthetic inspired by the eclectic sights and styles of New York City’s Chelsea neighborhood. Expect apparel, footwear, accessories and beauty products from an assortment of fitness and athleisure labels, including Nike and CALIA by Carrie Underwood. While the store will be owned and operated by Dick’s Sporting Goods, it will maintain the look and feel of a boutique-style shop. Learn more at ChelseaCollective.com.
Accessory worth splurging on: For the sunglasses obsessed, get acquainted with the new interchangeable shades by Carrera (interchangeable.carreraworld.com). Each set ($139 each) comes with two frame fronts that can be snapped on and off to create a fresh look. More options are available for $19 per front and come in a rainbow of colors.
