Stonebridge Farm to host flower-arranging class

Stonebridge Farm Nursery will hold a flower arranging class from 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 13. Participants will sponge paint a terra cotta pot and fill it with flowers and herbs.

Instructor is floral designer and master gardener Chris Holt. The nursery is at 2 Merriman Road, Economy.

Cost is $25; supplies are included. For each paid attendance, $5 will be donated to the Beaver County Humane Society. Registration required: 724-266-7312.

Rose Society Rose Festival

The Pittsburgh Rose Society will host its annual rose festival from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Drew Mathieson Horticultural Center in the Bidwell Training Center, 1600 Metropolitan St., Manchester.

Many types of rose bushes will be auctioned off beginning at 3 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. You need not be a member of the society to enter the competition. Information: 412-364-3227.

Polish Hill flea market

The West Penn Recreation Center in Polish Hill will be have a flea market 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. next Saturdayat West Penn field. If it rains, the flea market will move into the recreation center.

Flea market tables, $10, are open to everyone. Contact Willa Hill at 412-622-7353 for more details. The West Penn Recreation Center is at 470 Paulowna St. The Polish Hill Civic Association will be there with Polish Hill gear.

Waste collection

The Southwestern Pennsylvania Household Hazardous Waste Task Force will collect household items from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 19 in the Wave Pool parking lot at Settler's Cabin Park.

Items to be collected include aerosol cans; motor oil; transmission fluid; antifreeze; brake fluid; batteries; chemistry sets; compact fluorescent bulbs; gasoline and kerosene; ammonia; drain openers; acid cleaners; oven cleaners; mercury; latex, oil-based and alkyd-based paints; arts/crafts chemicals, rust preservatives; creosote; water sealers; paint thinners; furniture strippers; rodent killers; insecticides; weed killers; mothballs; fertilizer; photo chemicals; pool chemicals.

Fee is $2 a gallon; cash only. Information: 412-488-7452 or www.swpahhw.org.

Items that will not be accepted include ammunition; appliances; compressed gas cylinders (including propane tanks); drugs; explosives; flares; fluorescent tubes; leaking containers; radioactive materials (including smoke detectors); tires.
