Man charged with waiving rifle at pipeline workers

Authorities say a New Jersey man has been charged after threatening three workers conducting a survey for a pipeline project with a rifle

HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — Authorities say a New Jersey man has been charged after threatening three workers conducting a survey for a pipeline project with a rifle.

Hunterdon County prosecutors said that 48-year-old Lester Kinney faces terroristic threats and weapons charges after the Tuesday incident.

Penn East Pipeline said in a release that Kinney approached a three-man subcontractor crew that was conducting a wildlife survey.

They say Kinney waived the rifle in the air and vowed that he would prevent the pipeline project that’s set to run 118 miles between the Marcellus Shale region in Pennsylvania and Hunterdon County.

Kinney didn’t immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

Jeff Tittel, of the New Jersey Sierra Club, says the incident plays into the hands of the company as a way to discredit opposition.
