Stocks closed mostly higher Friday despite a slide in big technology names.

Energy and financial companies notched modest gains as oil and natural gas prices climbed. Technology giants Microsoft and Google parent Alphabet took some of the biggest losses after they turned in disappointing quarterly results.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 21.23 points, or 0.1 percent, to 18,003.75.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index added 0.10 points, or 0.0 percent, to 2,091.58.

The Nasdaq composite index slid 39.66 points, or 0.8 percent, to 4,906.23.

For the week:

The Dow is up 106.29 points, or 0.6 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 10.85 points, or 0.5 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 31.99 points, or 0.7 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 578.72 points, or 3.3 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 47.64 points, or 2.3 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 101.18 points, or 2 percent.
