Hose kicks back, injures bridge workers

Hose kicks back, injures bridge workers

Two PennDOT workers were injured early this morning while doing maintenance work on the Veterans Bridge on I-579 in Downtown Pittsburgh.

Police said the accident was reported at 2:46 a.m.

According to PennDOT, the two men were cleaning scuppers, which catch runoff from the bridge, with a high-pressure hose.

"Essentially they put the hose in the scupper and for some reason it caused too much pressure and backfired. The hose came out and knocked both men down," said PennDot spokesman Jim Struzzi.

The workers were treated at UPMC Mercy Hospital.

"Certainly we're concerned for their condition, but (fortunately) they're in the hospital and their families have been notified and are with them," Mr. Struzzi said.
