The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette was named 2008 Newspaper of the Year by the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association in an annual competition that recognizes overall excellence in newspapers across the state.
Competing in the largest of six circulation divisions, the Post-Gazette took first place in six of 10 categories that were judged in the contest and second place in another.
First place awards were given in Newswriting Excellence, General and Departmental News Coverage, Layout and Design, Best Use of Photography, Newspaper Promotion and Newspapers in Education/Literacy. The second place finish was in the category of Diversity.
The Patriot News of Harrisburg was runner-up in the division, with two first place and five second-place awards. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review had one first place and two second-place awards.
