Full power returns to Sq. Hill Tunnels

Full power returns to Sq. Hill Tunnels

Both sides of the Squirrel Hill Tunnels on the Parkway East are back at full power.

A contractor drilling in the vicinity hit an underground Duquesne Light electrical cable that feeds the tunnel, causing the lights to go out around 10 a.m. yesterday.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation brought in portable generators to restore some of the lights and operate the tunnel ventilation system. The incident caused backups in both directions while traffic continued to use the tunnels, albeit traveling slowly and with headlights.

Full power was restored to one of the tunnels during the night. Generators continued to provide power to the other one.
