J.Keith Motley, a native of Pittsburgh, has been named Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts in Boston.
Dr. Motley, 51, will lead an institution with about 12,500 undergraduate and graduate students with a full-time and part-time faculty of more than 800.
He is the first African-American to hold the position.
The Boston campus is the second largest in the University of Massachusetts system, behind the flagship campus in Amherst.
Raised in Garfield, Dr. Motley attended Rogers Elementary School and graduated from Peabody High School. He attended Northeastern University in Boston on a basketball scholarship and quickly rose to prominent administrative positions in higher education.
Northeastern University elected him to its Men's Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999.
