Rescuers find group stuck in W.Va. cave for 2 days

ELKINS, W.Va. -- Rescue crews found a group of people from central Pennsylvania who got lost over the weekend while exploring a cave.

Rescuers brought three of the cavers out of the Simmons-Mingo Cave yesterday just before 1 p.m. The other two were brought out about two hours later.

Shavers Fork Fire and Rescue squad leader John Hempel said the cavers were tired and cold but none suffered any major injuries.

Emergency officials said the group from Perry, Franklin, York counties in south-central Pennsylvania apparently got lost after entering the cave Saturday, and decided to stay there and wait for help.

A local resident notified emergency crews Sunday night after seeing that the group's vehicles were still parked near the cave.

The National Cave Rescue Commission responded to the search along with local rescue crews.
